Secondary Mathematics - Teacher Subject Specialism Training

Our FREE Secondary Mathematics programme covers content from Key Stages 3 and 4 (including some higher GCSE topics). The 12 hour face-to-face programme is offered as 2 full days, or as 6 after school twilight sessions. 

The recent Ofsted Education Inspection Framework (EIF) sets out how schools will be inspected. Specifically, guidance relating to the teaching of Mathematics states that:

‘all teachers of mathematics, including non-specialist teachers of mathematics, have sufficient mathematical and teaching content knowledge to deliver topics effectively’. Ofsted, May 2019

Who is the programme for?

Our programme is designed to support non-specialist teachers of Mathematics and is ideal for any teacher who is teaching Mathematics (or who would like to teach Mathematics) in addition to their ITT trained subject. 

Programme content

Our Secondary Mathematics programme content has been selected to cover key topics across Key Stages 3 and 4 and also includes some higher tier GCSE content.

Topics include:

  • Algebraic expressions
  • Fractions and proportion
  • Solving equations
  • Sequences and graphs
  • Pythagoras and trigonometry
  • The data cycle

What else is included?

Teachers who complete the programme will receive certification of attendance, as well as the opportunity to gain an additional qualification from the University of Plymouth through self-paced online learning.

Eligible participants will also receive free access to a bank of online resources and support.

We offer a range of course formats and dates to suit, including full day sessions in term time, a programme of after school twilight sessions, Saturday sessions and holiday cohorts.  A payment is available to schools that host. Contact mathshub@bishopchalloner.bham.sch.uk if you would like a cohort to be hosted at your school for your own staff, at no charge to the school and at a time to suit you.
